What Affects the Price?

Staircase type

A straight staircase is the most straightforward and affordable to fit. Curved, L-shaped and spiral staircases require a custom-manufactured rail, which adds significantly to the cost and lead time. Even a gentle curve or small landing mid-flight means a curved rail is needed.

Rail length

The longer your staircase, the more track is required. Most quotes are based on a standard straight flight of 13–15 steps. Unusually long or short staircases will affect the price accordingly.

Brand and model

Premium brands such as Acorn, Stannah and Handicare tend to command a higher price than lesser-known alternatives, but come with stronger warranties, nationwide aftercare, and proven reliability. Mid-range brands offer good value without sacrificing safety.

Features and upgrades

Standard features include a seatbelt, footrest, and two remote controls. Optional upgrades that affect price include: powered swivel seat, powered footrest, upholstery upgrade, perch seat, and extended warranty.

New vs reconditioned

A professionally reconditioned stairlift can cost 30–50% less than an equivalent new model. See our new vs reconditioned guide for a full comparison.

Running Costs

Stairlifts are extremely cheap to run. Most models use just 0.024 kWh per journey, which at current Irish electricity rates equates to approximately 0.4 cent per trip. Annual running costs are typically less than €10 for typical usage.

Stairlifts charge automatically whenever parked at a charging point, so there is no need to plug them in separately.

Servicing and Maintenance Costs

Most manufacturers recommend an annual service. A standard service call typically costs between €80 and €150 in Ireland. Many suppliers offer a service contract at around €10–€15 per month, which covers both the annual service and call-outs for faults.

How to Get the Best Price

  • Compare at least two or three suppliers before committing — prices vary significantly
  • Check whether you qualify for an Irish government grant of up to €8,000
  • Consider a reconditioned model if budget is a concern — many are indistinguishable from new
  • Ask suppliers whether any current promotions apply
  • Never pay for a home survey — reputable suppliers always provide these free of charge
